The application of tape to joints to either facilitate movement by enhancing a good muscle pattern or to restrict it.
Non-elastic rigid tape can be applied to joints and muscles to either facilitate movement by enhancing a good muscle pattern or to restrict it (e.g. sprained ankle). Generally this type of tape will immobilise or stabilise joints. It can sometimes provide immediate pain relief and help facilitate recovery. Patients with skin allergies need to be careful with tape. Sometimes mefix can be used under the tape which tends to be kinder to skin.
K taping is an elastic tape. It generally follows the path of a muscle and allows the patient freedom of movement. It is thought that a k-taping application simultaneously facilitates the reduction of oedema (swelling), and improves lymph and blood circulation. It is also thought to the contribute to normalization of muscle function and the support of ligaments and tendons. The result is generally a rapid reduction of pain and an improvement in the joint and muscle function.
