Manipulation

A fast technique using a reasonable degree of force

This is a therapeutic technique used usually on joints of the spine and sometimes on peripheral joints (e.g. ankle and wrists). In some circles the term manipulation is used vaguely, sometimes meaning gentle techniques and sometimes more forceful ones. True manipulation is always used at the end of joint range to gain more range. It is often termed high velocity low amplitude thrust (grade V). This is when you can sometimes hear the joint 'crack' or 'click'.
