Meniscal Tear / Footballer's Cartilage tear

The cartilage or properly termed meniscus in the knee is torn.

Patients will usually complain of swelling, pain and often the feeling of a loose body 'getting in the way' of normal knee movement.

Often there is a twisting injury and is common in contact sports such as football and rugby.

Keeping your thigh muscles strong may help prevent a torn meniscus.

Depending on the severity of the tear, some will heal but others will require surgery. Rehabilitation from a physiotherapist will facilitate early recovery. Treatment will include exercises to strengthen your knee and regain knee range as well as balance. Your exercises will be tailored to you depending on what you need.
